Are you a pessimist or an optimist?

By Magreth Mcgill

The world is filled with pessimists as well as us optimists... pessimists love to put a damper on everything and everyone. Optimists see the positive in every, or should I say nearly every person or situation. Why? Because that is the nature of the beast!

Pessimists are negative people by nature; optimists are positive people by their nature. Pessimism is like a poison in contrast to Optimism which is like a tonic.

In relationships if a negative person can bring a positive person down to their level, the negative person is able to feel better about them self. It is harder for an positive person to encourage a negative person because of the nature of the latter.

Have you ever wondered why Positive people prefer to keep company with positive people and Negative people are usually loners?

I am a people watcher, not just from afar, but I tend to watch how people react to certain circumstances and how they act in given situations. I have known a number of very negative people in my lifetime and no matter what I have done to encourage these negative people, they will always remain NEGATIVE.

Negative people seem to lack self esteem, I have found that they have a draining effect, (almost like leaving the radio and lights on in the car after turning the motor off and walking away) after an hour with such a person, I have felt exhausted, drained of all my energy and had a general feeling of bad humour. In fact of late, it has made me feel anger, especially when one particular negative person I know just kept going on and on about the same thing every time I saw him, I just lost it… I had to tell this person that I no longer wanted to hear what his problems were; after all, I had often tried to give him a positive slant on what he was bitching about and this was at least the 45 time I had heard the same story.

At this point, as a positive person has to make a decision, do I want or need this kind of person in my life? Is there any benefit to be in their company? If the answer is no, I have to make the choice to disassociate myself from them and leave them behind, because eventually they will infect me with their poison.

As a personal choice I choose to remain in the company of Positive people, they exude more energy and when you get two positive people together it is “watch out world, we are charged up and ready to take you on”.

The dynamics of a group may change the negative person’s way of thinking for a short period of time, while they are in the company of a higher number of positive people. But I don’t often see a permanent change polarity, because the charge wears off.

It is important to balance groups with higher positive than negative numbers or face the prospect of a very exhausting time.

I believe that if a negative person wants to change their outlook on life they can do so by surrounding themselves with high octane positive people for a greater majority of their time; there is a possibility for change, but this involves a lot of self talk and the want to change.

Is it time to re-invent yourself?

Ahh yes, the theme of negative vs positive, or in this case, pessimist vs optimist!

Be careful posting this topic here on Qondio..... Heh heh!

To better understand people, especially in this topic, a general understanding of personality types can be found helpful. Here is a recent website that I found right on when it came to testing for personalities.

http://www.mypersonality.info/personality-types/

After taking the test my personality was,
INFP - The "Dreamer"

An Optimist!!

Great intel.... Blessings,

As the eternal optimist, I can only say that if anyone has issues with what I say... my reply would be: The truth hurts... but you get over it!

Thanks for your comments. :)

Great intel Magreth, I too am an optimist. I choose not to surround myself with negative people...I work wih someone like that. Never has anything positive to say about anyone or anything...How sad huh? Have a great evening. I'll also be following your future intels.

Good to hear that there are more of us around, nothing in life can beat you down far enough to make it not worth getting back up again, and that is what optimism is all about. I look forward to writing more often... I get caught up with so many things that writing sometimes takes second place... :) From your intel, looks like we could be cross paths more often! Have a great day!

Very insightful intel. Awareness of these issues is something we should be mindful of.

Thanks

The world would be a better place if we did all try a little harder. :)

Thanks Magreth. I think it's great advice. Being negative is not helpful.

Thank you, I never thought that my simple thoughts were going to attract such wonderful comments! In the words of a famous song "Always look on the Bright side of life..." :)

This was actually good for me to read, very timely. I just spend a day with some family members that just about sucked the very breath out of me ;)

My Tip of the day... stay away from people who suck the life out of you...

I wonder what the ratio is. Are there more optimists or pessimists? My thought is there are three kinds of people in the world. Pessimists and people who can't count!
