Invention, Where did it all begin?

By Magreth Mcgill

When you think of an invention, you think of something that has been specifically designed to meet a need or make short work of a specific task.

Inventors are people who have or see a need and set about finding a way to make that specific task easier. Without them we would still be living in caves, waiting for some thing to happen.

Without Inventors the world would not have evolved. After all look at every thing you see that doesn't grow naturally or breathe because it has life!

Beds were invented because some poor cave guy, let’s call him Rolf, didn’t like sleeping on the cold hard ground. So he invented the mattress, this not only solved his need to get a good nights sleep and wake rested, it also made his wife (lets call her Betty) a happier person.

Once Rolf got a good nights sleep on his newly invented mattress he found that he was more capable of thinking straight and decided that he needed to make hunting easier, after all, if he could catch a deer instead of a few rabbits he could hunt less often and be home at the cave to protect Betty and his family, so Rolf invented the spear, this helped him kill larger animals to feed his family and by doing this it made things easier for him because he didn't need to go out and hunt every day.

This also gave Rolf more time to invent new things to make life easier around the cave. Being at home in the cave more often Rolf saw that Betty was struggling to do her daily chores, getting water in that deer skin wasn't easy because it was limited to the size of the skin, and every time she needed water she had to walk to the river to refill the skin.

After thinking about it, he thought that maybe if he could get the river to the cave it would make things easier, so he pondered for a while and finally came up with the answer. Channel the water! But how could he do that? Rather than let it beat him he fashioned a second spear and started poking at the ground, this certainly loosened the hard ground but it wasn't making things that much easier, he needed something to move the broken ground faster, so he found an old turtle shell and used it.

That was becoming too much like hard work down on his hands and knees scraping the dirt. Sitting back pondering the problem he saw some vine and thought, maybe if I can make a hole in the turtle shell, then attach the shell to the spear with the vine, I can scoop the dirt without breaking my back... the first shovel was invented and whilst doing so, the art of knot tying was established.

After channelling the water closer to the cave, this made Betty very happy not to have to walk endless mile to river every day had more time on her hands, so she found new ways of filling her time. She was so happy with Rolf’s inventions to make life easier she wanted to give him a more comfortable cave to dwell in, she started by taking a bear skin and placing some rocks in the right position covered the rocks with the bear skin and made Rolf his first armchair. Not only was this the first armchair invented, but the advent of Interior Decorating was born.

The world has the likes of Rolf and Betty to thank, because if Rolf never invented that first bed or Betty never invented the first armchair we would all still be living in caves.

Shouldn’t we have a Inventors Award Ceremony Annually?

After all, inventors make life easier for us all, why not give them some of the lime light that is awarded to other important people.
