Measure your Advertising

Many business owners know the value of advertising. But how do you know if your advertising efforts are paying off? Countless business owners place ads haphazardly.

They will advertise with anyone that promises them that they are going to get a great deal or plenty of exposure.

There are a couple of things that every business that advertises with classified advertising websites should keep in mind. Not all classified advertising works!

Do you target your advertising to your audience? After all, if you are selling pet food, advertising in the computer section would be fruitless, as your target audience is not in that section.

When you place an ad do you measure its value?

Something of greater consequence when you are spending ‘good money’ on an advertisement is that you want to know that you will get some form of return for your investment; otherwise it may not be the right place to advertise.

If your advertising budget is large, this may not matter to you, however, most businesses today have limited funds to advertise and want a return on investment, the way to do this is with “measured” advertising.

Measuring your Advertising

How you can do this is simply by making sure you place a “call to action” in the text of your classified ad.

When advertising on a classifieds website you will naturally get a large amount of replies via email, which will be easily identifiable as they come directly from the classifieds website and ensure total privacy for both advertiser and responder. However, there is also the possibility that you have placed your phone number on the ad, in which case you would not be able to measure it unless you added a ”call to action” this may come in the form of: Mention this ad to “Receive a special Discount” or “Every Caller gets a Widget” when replying to this ad.

The third and final possibility is; when you have your website linked to your advertisement. In this case you could treat this in the same way as you would the phone call to your ad, with a call to action and most importantly make sure that you have Google Analytics or another form of Traffic Analytics script set up on your website so that you can see where your referrals are coming from, when a website refers traffic to your site it will be evidenced who the referrer to your website is.

Conclusion: When placing your advertisement, it is important to think of ways to measure the advertisement, if you add a few lines in the context of your ad, asking the person responding to your ad to mention that he/she has seen the ad on: and then name of the classifieds website. This will help you effectively measure whether the ad is worth the investment.
